| The first recognized WCW World Tag Team Champions are Doom (Ron Simmons & Butch Reed). The actual title belts were formerly the NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championships, which became property of Ted Turner in 1988. In January of 1991, Ted Turner officially renamed the promotion "World Championship Wrestling," which of course carried over to the names of all the title belts. Doom currently held the NWA Tag Titles, so they became the first WCW World Tag Team Champions. The belts became exclusively defended on WCW television and house shows. NWA eventually created new tag team titles for themselves in July of 1992. The new NWA Tag Team Championships only lasted a week as they were unified with the WCW World Tag Team Championships on July 12, 1992. The belts continued to be recognized by the National Wrestling Alliance until September 1993 when WCW withdrew from the NWA. In April 1995, the NWA once again created new Tag Team Championships which eventually became part of TNA Wrestling. The WCW World Tag Team Championships were defended until November 18, 2002 when they were unified with the WWF World Tag Team Championships. |

-6 | The famous "negative reign" by the Freebirds. WCW taped the episode of the Freebirds losing the tag titles to the Steiners six days before they actually beat Doom to win the titles. Freebirds came into the arena in Montgomery wearing the titles and lost them to the Steiners. The Steiners then had to give them to Doom so that once they reached WarGames in Phoenix, Doom could walk into the arena holding the titles in order to lose to the Steiners. Confused? |

- | Survivor Series 2001 was the end of the Invasion angle between WWF and WCW. All titles were being unified with a final match on the card to decide whether WWF or WCW would be the brand that "survived." The Dudley Boyz defeated the current WWF World Tag Team Champions, The Hardy Boyz, in steel cage unification match and WWF won the final match against WCW. Therefore, The Dudley Boyz were recognized as by WWF as the World Tag Team Champions. The WCW brand belts were never seen again. |
